In 1983, many parents turned their backs on their children with AIDS, while a few rallied to their side. When the AIDS virus infected Suzanne Loebl's son David, she joined a support group that came to be known as the Mothers' Group. The book chronicles the lives of the members. We follow these mothers as they fiercely and tenderly stand by their children. The women quietly submerge their own grief, confront a hostile world, and deal with complex medical issues. Most of all they help their progeny enjoy whatever time they have left on earth and provide an anchor amidst fear and despair. However, when they come to their Tuesday night meetings, they let their terror, grief and frustration flow freely. The book is also a memoir to Suzanne's son David. It demonstrates how illness did not dim his exuberance and shows how one can be productive and happy even though the future may look dim. In addition, the book provides a snapshot of the gay world, transformed by AIDS-from its newly liberated, somewhat giddy post-Stonewall days to its sober sense of extra responsibility.

The Mothers' Group Of Love Loss and AIDS eBook Suzanne Loebl Reviews
A moving story about Mothers forced to face their children's deaths. What is especially touching is the author's relationship with her son and how she deals with his death. All the mothers in the group have a story to share, and by sharing help each other. A must read.
this is an incredibly beautiful portrait of loebl's relationship with her son, and it really gives a face and a family to the tragedy of hiv/aids. the prose flows smoothly, and loebl tells us her story as if we were intimate friends from page one, sharing her pain but also her strength. the story is so captivating and moving that it is hard to put it down. highly recommended.
This is a very moving memoir of AIDS and motherly love. It is the touching, heart-wrenching journey of a mother who learns that her son is gay, then that he is HIV positive, and eventually that he has contracted AIDS, from which he dies. It is a book about courage -- both Suzanne Loebl's and her son (David) and about the courage of the other women she meets in the Mother's Group she joins of women coping with a child with AIDS. And yet it is a book about opportunities not lost, of life appreciated, of love given rather than withheld. Suzanne Loebl, realizing her son's days are numbered, takes every opportunity to share in her son's life and enjoy his presence for as long as it lasts.
